Double denim: legit style choice or ultimate error?
It’s not an era that we would necessarily class as particularly style conscious, but the 90s has been a source of inspiration for designers and trend-setter. In particular, a look that can either be so wrong, or so right: double denim. Remember the horror of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s outfit choice at the 2001 American Music Awards? If you’re picturing a floor length denim dress, denim cowboy hat, and patchwork denim suit then you’ve remembering, correctly, a sartorial catastrophe to say the least.
Quite unbelievably, double denim (the act of wearing denim on both your top and bottom half) is currently a look seen on celebrities, style blogs and even Vogue front covers. They may have revived their classic 90s tunes, but please do not be tempted to take style tips from B*Witched, who regularly rocked the double denim look with quite disastrous results. The new double denim is about layering different shades and experimenting with your silhouette.
Your essential fashion reference comes from Queen of French chic, Isabel Marant. The esteemed designer is loved by some of the most stylish women on the planet. For her autumn/winter 2011 show, Ms Marant sent girls down the catwalk in an array of double denim looks. But take heed from the style maven; pair a loose denim shirt with skinny jeans. Unstructured is definitely the way to go. Layer different shades of denim for a contemporary look, avoid ‘matchy matchy’ jacket and trouser combos.
The editor of Vogue Mexico made a brave decision with the cover of the August 2012 issue. It was destined to divide opinions when stunning model Kasia Struss posed next to a motorbike, clad head to toe in denim. However, this wasn’t just any denim ensemble; it was designed by hip label Rag & Bone, favourite of fashionistas the world over and with Kate Moss as its current brand ambassador.
Tread carefully and try out a denim jacket making sure to take note of the advice above. Just remember, it’s never ok to match your clothes with your man: Britney and Justin, we’re talking to you.
